The Town of Fairhaven is excited to welcome Branden Costa as our new Conservation Agent and Sustainability Coordinator! Branden started this position on August 16th.

Branden is a conservation biologist with a background in environmental science & management as well as natural resource conservation. Over the last five years, he has conducted research on state-listed coastal waterbirds like American oystercatchers, roseate terns, and piping plovers and the resource areas that support them, including tidal flats, marshes, barrier beaches, dunes, and rocky intertidal shores along the southern coasts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Branden’s training and experience he’s received from reputable and respected land stewards such as Mass Audubon, The Lloyd Center for The Environment, and The Commonwealth’s Department of Conservation and Recreation has prepared him for the roles of Conservation Agent and Sustainability Coordinator. Branden shares that “these organizations and their hardworking staff members have instilled in me both a passion for conservation and a strong sense of duty to serve my community. Paired with the privilege of training under some of New England's most influential conservationists and wetland scientists, I feel that I am adequately prepared to serve the community in this capacity.”

To curb the cost of college courses, Branden worked several full-time customer service jobs in Fairhaven. When he came across this opportunity, he knew immediately that it would be the perfect way to give back to the community that supported him from a young age. “I found it quite gratifying to educate members of the community as a Conservation Biologist on West Island, and by protecting its threatened/endangered wildlife and the delicate resources they depend on. I simply couldn’t pass up the chance to engage with the community on a larger scale.”
